Style Hunting – Vintage Trend Inspirations and Insights for Home Décor 101
As we enter , or re-enter, times of austerity in the UK, there are some interesting insights emerging from Reimagined Zeitgeist’s research and analysis of the current Vintage Zeitgeist.
It has long been recognised that when the economy is struggling, us Brits seek solace in all things bright and cheerful. A quick review of local sociocultural trends show signs of a significant increase of interest in shiny metals, think sunshine and moonshine!
Things that bling just sing!!
Surfaces that reflect light may psychologically bring us hope when everything else around us looks bleak. In a physical sense, they are eye-catching and can add interest to an otherwise ordinary colour scheme, decorative theme or ensemble.
While stock markets determine the monetary value of precious metals, such as gold and silver, and can influence trends, some of the ‘lesser precious’ metals are coming into their own again, and the more blingy – all the better.
EPNS and Copper
EPNS (Electroplated Nickel Silver), otherwise known as ‘poor man’s silver’, has very thin layers of silver that are plated to a base usually made up of copper, nickel and zinc. The benefits are not just in price but also EPNS is easier to keep clean and shiny, though don’t go overboard on the elbow grease as the silver plate can wear. EPNS tea sets, candlesticks, trays and all sorts of other kitchenalia and tableware have enjoyed popularity trends since its invention in the 1840s. And today, it’s making a comeback as a highly decorative addition to home décor. This is the moonshine of our metal surfaces igniting interest, with copper being the sunshine!

Copper is a staple metal that has a long history of use in the home and in industry spanning thousands of years to early civilisation. Today, its prized more for its decorative qualities. It tarnishes with age. Some prefer the patina of much older pieces and others are more captivated by the beauty of the bright burnished-gold colouring of more modern-day wares. Pieces that can hang proudly on walls are currently in demand, such as jelly moulds, as well as other kitchen objects such as measuring jugs and pans. Copper bed pans are favoured by some, particularly those sporting an interesting pattern or texture.

So whether you prefer the warm bright rays of sunshine or the silvery shimmer of moonlight, or both, there’s a decorative glimmer of hope for everyone with copper and EPNS.
Happy Style Hunting!
